PostHeaderIcon What Exactly Happens on Mondays in Bangkok? (Multiple Questions)?

I’ve purchased my yellow shirt and I’m ready for Bangkok Mondays! Now I just need to know what I should be doing. Are there any rituals that Thai people go through other than wearing yellow to pay respect to their king? Do they make pilgrimmage to the Grand Palace? Do they make offering to the temples?

Someone just asked about Chinatown on Mondays so from the answer there I gathered that stores like MBK and Central are all open but small food stalls are closed. I would like to know if any temples are open on Mondays in Bangkok? What about tourist attractions like Muay Thai boxing? Will I be able to get a haircut on Mondays?
Thanks for your input Gerald J, but if you read my question carefully I never said the King lived at the Grand Palace. I already knew he didn’t but it was a former home of their Kings.

Just street stalls on sidewalks are closed on Monday. Other places are opened.

For yellow shirt, some Thai people wear it on Mondays.
But I and many people over here have not worn it since the PAD used yellow shirt as PAD’s symbol.
We always respect our king but don’t want to be yellow or red!

PostHeaderIcon Should I go with L.A. Fitness or 24-hour Fitness?

I have decided to get a gym membership and whip my body back into shape.

I left the Navy (my time was up) last December and now I’m a college student. Needless to say, my body has softened up since I got out. I used to work out onboard the ship when I was still on active duty.

I am not working at the moment and figured that joining a gym would give me something to do when I’m not at school and I want to get back into shape.

I am a female and I will do cardio, maybe some weights, and I want to join a cardio kickboxing class.

Now my question is this: I live near a newly opened L.A. Fitness and a 24-hour Fitness that’s been around for a couple of years. Which one should I join considering the type of activities I will be doing? Which one has more to offer and is "affordable"?

Also does anyone know how much membership is to both gyms? I live in the San Diego area.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Investigate both of them. See what each has to offer based on your interests. See what each one costs.

Then go with whichever one fits your needs and wallet the most.

PostHeaderIcon might have taken the wrong pair of gloves home?

Ok so today I was doing muay thai and i was only shadow boxing and practicing my round house kick so i didnt need my gloves. i put them on the edge of the ring, but when 2 guys starting sparring i put them on the floor next to the wall. before, i had my handwraps on and i punched(right hand) the heavy bag like 10-20 times, not my hardest, just playing around like jab-punch 75% power.

then i moved over to the mats and practiced my kick some more in the air. i think i left my gloves by the wall, and then i went to kick some heavy bags. then at the end of class we went to do sit ups and swuats and push ups, i took my handwraps off, put them in my bag, and i remembered that i forgot to get my gloves. i look over to where i left my gloves(and this is where my memory gets a lil hazy), and i think they’re still there. i mightve:

a) picked them up and put them in the back of the classroom
b) left them there and got them after the workout

but then i remember before everybody went to do situps and stuff i was kicking the bag and i dont tihnk i touched my gloves, maybe i did.

here’s the funny part. i come home, put on my gloves, and surprisingly my right hand was wet for some reason even though i didnt use the gloves. im pretty sure theyre mine, but im getting paranoid because howcome they would be wet, and the right hand is starting to smell really bad(from sweat). ive had those gloves for 2.5 months. there’s anoteher guy at the gym that has the same gloves.

what do u think, they’re wet and i dont know why.
sorry im supersticious

Someone probably spilled water on them. Whether they ARE yours or not …at this point you just gotta keep…they’re yours now! As long as they fit it’s alright. Maybe the guys did a switch-a-roo on you, but you couldnt prove that if it did happen. You aren’t sure yourself.

PostHeaderIcon Kickboxing in Philly?

I am looking for a good kickboxing gym/school in the Philadelphia area. To be more specific Lansdale. My goal is fitness. Sparring maybe down the road, but for now it is purely fitness.

Try these sites. Failing that look in your ‘yellow pages/classified newspaper ads.
Good luck!

PostHeaderIcon What is the difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing?

as the name implies, kickboxing is more focused on kicks other than punches. as for muay thai, it is mostly focused on knees, elbows etc etc

PostHeaderIcon Training for cross country – new start?

Hi, i have been out of action for several years and used to use cross country to improve my fitness for my kickboxing. I am pretty much startign a fresh with this and have planned and ran a .75 mile route which i have run for the past 4 days. I still cannot complete the run entirely most of it is on fairly short hills but with some big hills (2) (this is where i struggle). I have done road running in the past and obviously this is very different but i would like to hear peoples experiences – what should i be doing? running the .75 mile for a week then gradually increase? run slower or what? i do understand as well that eating is a big part of running when i used to train 6 days a week i had to have a high carb inake. This time round i would like to loose a few pounds as well so what is the best foods to eat to aid this which will give me energy too. I also like a routine before i run this used to be a black coffee half hour before i trained? anyone elses routines which help them? Help!

I suggest trying one day on, one rest day. Or just try this run x3 a week til you can do it, then slowly build up either speed or distance. Fartlek is good (changing pace).

For energy – carbs are good. So think pasta, bananas (not too many of latter!). For short distances you really dont need too much, i’d focus more on warm ups and warm downs after before/after the run. Dont eat before you go running (allow at least an hour) – i wouldnt drink the coffee. Keep it for when you get back.

PostHeaderIcon Boxing/Kickboxing – what sort of things can I do to train…?

I can’t go to any classes at the moment as they are all on when I am working, but I would still like to start training for general fitness and so that when I can finally join a class I have some experience. My local gym has a boxing class so I can use the stuff any time I want, I just can’t get to the classes.

Any advice on what sort of stuff to do? I would like to do this purely for the funof the sport but might want to compete further down the line. Thanks!

(ps does it make any difference that I am a woman?)

Running, skipping and shadowboxing.
Don’t forget stretching and sit-ups too.

Doesn’t make any difference that you are a woman.
All forms of boxing are excellent sports for keeping in shape and enjoying the excercise.
Contrary to what people think, there is hardly any contact in 99% of boxing training, and can be done by people of any weight/height/strength.

PostHeaderIcon Muay thai & kickboxing?

whats the difference between muay thai & kick boxing?

Kickboxing is a generic term that encompasses many Kickboxing forms like Savat, Muay Thai and others.

I have never studied any other form of Kickboxing but Muay Thai so I cannot identify the differences and/or similarities of the various styles of Kickboxing.
