PostHeaderIcon does kickboxing help you lose weight?

Hey, I am thinking about starting kickboxing. I have been told it is great for fitness etc. but does it actually help you lose weight?
Thanks in advance!

The simple answer is yes. The more complex answer is that you get out of it what you put into it so if you get in class and work hard you’ll reap the rewards.

If you don’t really train hard, then you don’t see the benefits.

Also, if you’re wanting to lose weight I would examine your diet. You should drink at least 64 ounces of water every day, more if you’re working out hard. Eat several small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism burning constantly as opposed to 2-3 large meals.

I’m 42, still a lean 180#, do Aikido as well as rock climbing and can compete and keep up with people half my age.

PostHeaderIcon fitness and healthy food advice ?

training for the royal marines. been training in the gym for a while now doing free weights and such , no cardio ! 5 minutes warm up on the bike n thats it , well tonight i finally gave up smoking and now want to start the cardio training , obviously im crap atm because i just stopped smoking , so what u recomend just a run every morning and night , gym at lunchtime 5 days a week , swimming on 1 day and kickboxing on another , this be ok to get me fit ? also i dont eat healthy at all , i think i need to start , whats a healthy substitute for bread ? i come home from the gym and go mental on the carbs . any tips ? thanks

Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won’t feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & you can start making healthy choices.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin which can store the calories eaten into fat. The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 minutes. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

PostHeaderIcon I’ve been exercising a lot more, but eating less. Is this normal?

About 3 weeks ago, I took up kickboxing. Included in my membership was regular boxing/sparring and conditioning classes. I now do Muay Thai twice a week, Boxing on Saturdays, and Strength/Conditioning on Sundays.

The workouts are intense and I’ve been getting a lot more sleep than usual. It’s all good, but I’ve been eating a hell of a lot less. I’m usually hungry again after a couple hours after eating (no matter how much I eat…) but lately I’m just not hungry all that much at all. And I’m not sick or anything. Is this normal?

I’m 16, female, and in okay shape. I’m not "fit", but I’m certainly not chubby. I’m 5′6 and 138 pounds. I didn’t generally exercise before this, just basketball during season and gym class out of season…

Thanks!

Larissa,
Great job on starting a fitness program. Martial arts is a fun and practical way to stay in shape. I thought this was a great question so I did a little bit of research. The two websites below go into great detail on the subject of appetite and eating well. But I will summarize what I found in case you don’t have the time or desire to read both articles.

First, it is normal for appetite loss after starting a new fitness routine. Exercising, the extra sleep and even your new eating habits all take time for your body to get used to. If it lasts more then 2 weeks, though, see a doctor.

Second, eating every 2 hours isn’t bad. Eating many small meals throughout the day keeps your metabolism high and means you’re likely to burn most of it before your next meal (i.e. no fat is stored). I eat this way (usually) and find that I don’t get very hungry between meals which makes it less likely that I overeat.

Finally, I recommend talking to your trainer or instructor. They probably have some insight into this.

Best Wishes,

Spider

PostHeaderIcon Daycare at 24 hour fitness, will my 10 month old be alright?

I just began working out again (kickboxing and Yoga classes), unfortunately My hubby works when a couple of the classes are scheduled.

I have never taken my son to daycare or left him with someone he does not know, but he does really well when meeting new people.

It will only be a couple times a week for an hour each…What should I know about the daycare and what do I need to ask about their services?

Has anyone used a 24 hour fitness daycare, if so can I hear about your experiences?

I would say no. Maybe for kids 3 an older, but not for a 10 month old. I know for a fact that when the person in the Kid’s Club goes on break or lunch, they pull someone from the front counter with no experience to watch the kids.

They are not licensed as a day care facility because technically you are not dropping off your child and leaving, you are staying there and working out.

PostHeaderIcon How Is Muay thai And kickboxing differant?

Heya :). I am very interested in martial arts and would love to take up a couple very soon, but just wanna know about Kickboxing and muay Thai as I would like to take up one of these 2, what are there differances? They look the exact same to me, anyone know more about them? I am not the most knowlegable person on martial arts. Many thanks :)
Muay thai IS kickboxing by definition.

Competition wise, muay thai and kickboxing have different rules, for instance:

Muay thai allows the clinch, knee and elbow strikes, and kicks to the legs , whereas kickboxing tipically does not.

PostHeaderIcon Tips for Weight cutting?

Okay, so recently I accepted two fights for saturday…but I was supposed to drop down to 200.lbs. I came up five to ten pounds over weight, I did ALOT of cardio and had a clean diet. I also power-lift atleast once a week. What my typical weekly schedule looks like is:
Monday- Full body power lifting (20 mins) boxing, 2 hrs.
Tuesday- Cardio (sprints 80.yds 10X, 1/2 to 1 mile run) Boxing
Wensday: Weights, light cardio , Muay Thai
Thursday: Cardio, Boxing
Friday:Off
Saturay: Muay Thai, Medicine Ball workouts
Any tips or pointers for weight cutting or anything? Serious Question
Usually, I run on the 2nd floor of my school; It’s about a quarter of a mile long and it’s carpeted and inclined. So I make about a mile at the most for my distance run and about a half of a quarter for my sprint. I also run outside on the football fields which are pretty rough.

Your schedule looks great, you’re getting in enough cardio and weight lifting to even our your lean muscle ratio compared to the rest of your body. The only thing i could recommend is to try to eat healthier, if you;re not already. Whats your average distance for your cardio? it is flat like a track, or hilly like suburban streets? More often, with distance running you lose more weight, but inclined running your endurance is built. Either way, keep it up, might just be extra water weight, stubborn body fat, etc.
