What should I take ? No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs Muay Thai Kickboxing?
I am looking to take up either one of these when school starts. Which is better to get fit and lose some weight ? What if someone attacked you, which would be more practical ?
Thanks !
They each have pros and cons; neither is better or worse than the other. The major difference would be that in jiu-jitsu, much of the emphasis is on flexibility and agility; Muay Thai is a about pure brute force, getting as much strength behind a fist, knee, or elbow as possible. Both are great for getting fit and losing weight and would help you to hold your own in a fight. However, if you feel like you want to focus more on increasing agility and whatnot, jiu-jitsu would trump it; if you want to build muscles faster, Muay Thai would be better. Have fun!

I do Muay Thai Kickboxing and just wanted to know are push ups, ab workouts, and running good to do?
And some stretching? I go to this one Muay Thai gym that’s about an hour away (Mondays-Wednesdays) and when I’m at home (whenever I don’t go train) I wondered if it’s good to do push ups, some ab workouts, and running/jogging?
Push ups are optional. You can get the same benefits from lifting, but I would highly recommend that you do one or the other.
Ab training is essemtial to everything Muay Thai. Powerful abs are a must.
Running – If you are going to be competing, you have to do your road work. If you are not going to compete then you probably can skip the running.
Stretching is another essential. The more flexible you are the easier it is to do everything else. You will be able to do more with less energy exertion.
What martial arts are most similar to Muay Thai and Kickboxing?
I wanted to train in one of the two but there are no gyms nearby. I love to throw the Thai kick. Are there any similar martial arts i would like?
BJJ is not even a striking art how would it be similar? K1 isn’t a martial art, it’s an fighting organization. White Crane Gung Fu.. not really.. and Karate is somewhat similar but not very. Krav Maga is self defense it is not very similar either.
The most similar thing to Muay Thai Kickboxing is regular Kickboxing or Savate

What muscles are used in a Muay Thai/kickboxing Knee Strike? How can I increase the power in my Knee Strikes?
Hi, I would like to increase the power in my knee strikes, any other advice besides just kneeing the bag? Interested in what kind of training should i do to increase my power without taking away from the speed of my strikes? (I’ve heard that using really heavy weights will slow you down).
The principal muscles used in a knee strike from a clinch are the quadriceps muscles and the core and ab muscles. Increase power in your knee strikes by (1) strength training and (2) increasing glute-hamstring flexibility. Both are very important for powerful knee strikes. There are many approaches to increasing leg strength, from body weight-based training regimens (such as P90x) to weight training (full squats, dead lifts, weighted lunges). If weight training, aim for 3 or 4 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Unless you are doing serious power-lifting training (3 to 6 sets of 5 or fewer reps with 85-95% of single rep max weight) you shouldn’t lose any speed. On the other hand, if you increase your body weight by say 10% with lean muscle you may lose speed if you don’t maintain flexibility. Do plenty of core/ab exercises. Make regular stretching a serious part of your training, maybe try yoga to improve flexibility.
What constitutes a Kickboxing record? Just kickboxing matches or even Muay Thai, Sanshou, Pradal Serey records?
Kickboxing is quite vague. There’s Pradal Serey, Sanshou/Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing), Muay Thai, Savate, etc. If for example you competed in Sanshou, Savate, Kickboxing, and then Muay Thai, would all those matches in those specific arts be recorded in your kickboxing record or would it just be the kickboxing?
It depends on the organization. Some will list all fights on a fighters record, some may list just a couple, and some will list only fights with that particular organization.
Are there any other striking classes other than Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai?
I’ve been taking up kickboxing to increase my striking ability, but I was wondering if there are any others? And, are they worth learning compared to Kickboxing, boxing, Muay Thai, etc?
there are thousands of martial arts that cover striking and yes they are worth it as long as you train hard and have a good instructor.
many styles cover both striking and grappling such as all karate styles, many kung fu and japanese jujutsu
What makes muay thai kickboxing different from other forms of martial arts?
thanks
Muay Thai is different from other martial arts in many ways. One way is that it uses only strikes. There is no grappling in Muay Thai. This distinguishes it from grappling arts like Judo or wrestling. Muay Thai is different from boxing or kickboxing because it incorperates the use of strikes with elbows and knees. It regular kickboxing, the only strikes allowed or used are kicks with the legs, and punches with the fists. Muay Thai not only incorperates strikes with the hands and feet, but also kicks using the shins, knees strikes, and elbow strikes. Also, Muay Thai has it’s own style of clinching. The Muay Thai clinch is often referred to as the "Muay Thai plum".
Well known MMA fighters who are know for their use of Muay Thai are Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Anderson Silva.
