Does Muay Thai kickboxing have any sort of ranking system?
I saw a guy try to rank the system like karate but i thought Muay Thai Kickboxing did not have a ranking system?
Official Muay Thai uses a special band often worn around the head, arm or leg to signify the prowness and skill levels of their fighters. Each fighter can also choose their own special head piece as well. There are no belts, no formal ranking system at all in Muay Thai but a good fighter, who can prove they train good fighters can get to certain titles for their abilities much like you have Sensei, Renshi, Kyoshi and so forth in Karate systems, however they are different in MT.
There was a school about 40 minutes from here that claimed to teach MT. They used a belt system for their students and it intrigued me…especially since I only studied MT off and on back in my old kickboxing days. I went there, watched the classes and it was major joke. It was clear the instructor had a little training but he mixed Karate and Judo in with his MT…all three of which he was not very good at.
When I inquired about his use of belts he got all defensive and started getting crappy with me…and all I asked was why he used a belt system when there is none in MT. He was rude so it was clear he was a false teacher which there are huge numbers of schools that claim to teach MT that are a joke. I do not teach Muay Thai but still study it when I have time. It was a great kickboxing system and helped my traditional Karate kumite ability a lot.
