PostHeaderIcon In terms of learning self defense, is Muay Thai and Kickboxing the same thing?

I want to learn Kickboxing for self defense and not as a sport, but I’ve read places that Muay Thai (which people recommend as the best self defense) is different from Kickboxing. In terms of self defense, is this true?
The thing is, I checked the site where I’d probably sign up for Kickboxing and it said on the site that it incorporates effective hand, knee, elbow and foot techniques… so what does that mean?

I dont think kickboxing teaches knees and elbows. Also their stances are completely different. Muay Thai’s stance is more weirder. I dont prefer that stance. Also muay thai clinches and does knees and elbows.

Kickboxing is taken from another martial art system and reduced to basic kicks and punches, all they did was to take out some of the techniques. It’s usually catering to people, women in particular, looking for an exciting, different workout. Muay Thai is a true martial art system, very old, very traditional and very effective. It has superior techniques compared to the kickboxing classes
In fact in the beginning of those no holds barred, no strikes withheld competitions, like the UFC thai kickboxers were on of the few that could hold their own against the new Brazilian ju jutsu guys

muay thai and kickboxing are some-what similar but they r differet. the stances are different and in kickboxing u only throw kicsk and punches. Some people may say it is a mix of tae kwon do and boxing or karate and boxing. Muay THai was a style of martial art originally used in war. you learn how to fight in the clinch, throw elbows and knees along with kicks and punches. Also in muay thai, they really emhpasise the leg kicks .

In general Muay thai is a form of kickboxing, much more complete than straight up american kickboxing. Muay Thai utilizes punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch fighting. Where as straight kickboxing is only punches, and kicks, and only kicks above the waist. For self defense or street fighting I’d go with Muay thai because elbows, and knees are VICIOUS, and produce fight ending blows. People aren’t going to like getting hit with elbows, and especially getting severely cut open from elbows. For me though Muay Thai is best mixed with some form of ground fighting style, JUST INCASE you do get taken down you’ll know how to defend your self there as well. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works best for that situation, and most BJJ gyms have muay thai as a part of their curriculum also.

in the most basic terms, muay thai is different becuase it includes elbows and knees.

kickboxing is a sport, and muay thai is a system of self defense developed for warfare and combat. because of this, muay thai will teach you techniques for self defense that you will not learn in kickboxing.
there are very different techniques for defending yourself on the street and winning a competition.

okay the thing is kickboxing could be a watered down version on any original fighting style there could be kickboxing coming from karate, tae kwon do, muay thai and many more. and muay thai is a martial art that focuses on kicks, punches, elbows, knees ,a lot of cardio, pad training, and sparring and the muay thai stance is actually not wide.and the muay thai these wise guys are talking about is is an ancient fighting style Krabi Krabong the combat fighting style for war in ancient times that then evolved into muay boran fighting with out weapons and then that evolved muay thai = modern muay thai

Muay thai and kick boxing are not same fully, is different in some case. Muay thai is a art of Thailand and has own unique techniques. It’s long range, middle range, last range fighting includes punching, knees, knee kicks and kicking.
